This collection of material describes a three-credit senior/masters level course on wireless networks and mobile systems developed and taught at Virginia Tech. The course is innovative in that it is multidisciplinary (across computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering), integrates topics from all protocol layers for wireless and mobile systems (from wireless physical layer constraints through mobile application design), and utilizes a pedagogy based on student-centered discovery (through hands-on laboratories and exercises and design projects). The course was made possible through a generous donation by the Intel Corporation through a "Wireless Curriculum Development and Instructional Laboratory" grant.
The course was first taught in Spring 2003 as ECE/CS 4984: Wireless and Mobile Systems Design at Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus and at Virginia Tech's Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church, Virginia. The class was taught again in Spring 2004, with minor changes, as ECE/CS 4984: Wireless Networks and Mobile Systems. Beginning in Spring 2005, the class will be taught under its permanent designation as ECE/CS 4570: Wireless Networks and Mobile Systems.
